Abstract: 

The report summarizes the MSP process in Macaronesia and provides a synthesis of lessons learned and best practices identified. It is produced in the framework of the MarSP project, aimed at assisting the competent authorities of Portugal and Spain in implementation of the Maritime Spatial Planning in the Macaronesian Archipelagos of Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands.

Implementation Context: 

The document is produced in the framework of the MarSP Plan (Macaronesian Maritime Spatial Plan, completed in December 2019), aimed at improving the Maritime Spatial Planning process in the Macaronesian Archipelagos of Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands.  

Aspects / Objectives: 

The purpose of the document is to provide a database of best practices for development of the Maritime Spatial Planning in Macaronesia. The examples listed provide guidance for the implementation of the cross-border cooperation at the national and regional level.  

Method: 

The report integrates contributions of various authors and institutions involved in the MSP processes at the international level. The best practices applicable to the Macaronesian region were selected from the literature according to the set of specific criteria. 

Main Outputs / Results: 

The report integrates the best practices relevant to the MSP in the Macaronesian region, and summarizes lessons learned from the MSP experience in the region.  

Transferability: 

The report focuses on the Macaronesian region, but the lessons learned and best practices identified can support the MSP processes in the insular areas and regions that are subjects to the cross-border maritime cooperation.
