QUESTIONS THIS PRACTICE MAY HELP ANSWER:

  • What is the best location in Madeira, Azores or Canary Islands to plan the activity?
  • Is it possible to develop the activity in a specific marine area?

IMPLEMENTATION CONTEXT:

The application was developed within the context of the PLASMAR project, which defines scientific methodologies that contribute to the Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP).

ASPECTS / OBJECTIVES:

Facing an increase in demand for the maritime space, linked to a wide range of economic activities with the participation of multiple actors. It is anticipated that the tool will facilitate the MSP process for the development of maritime activities.

METHOD:

The project incorporates data and information obtained from the European data initiatives (EMODnet), Copernicus Service satellites, European Environment Agency, regional projects, and existing national and local databases.

MAIN OUTPUTS / RESULTS:

INDIMAR will represent a key element in the decision-making of the public administration or of the private initiative when it comes to locating or discarding specific areas for the development of a specific economic sector by being able to adequately filter the data collected between 2017 and 2020 (during the development of the project).

The advantage of this tool lies in its ability to gather and use all the affordable environmental and territorial information, making it available in an orderly and simple way. The information is available for consultation and download. The INDIMAR System also works as a repository of marine environmental data in the study area.

TRANSFERABILITY:

Today, the application contains data from three archipelagos of the Macaronesia, but the model is applicable to any marine geographic area of the world. The tool can find its application in public and private sectors involved in the development of a maritime activity.

RESPONSIBLE ENTITY:

ECOAQUA (University Institute of Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems).

FUNDING SOURCE:

Developed with the support of the European Union, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Operational Programme of Territorial Cooperation Madeira-Azores-Canary Islands (POMAC 2014-2020).
