Questions this practice may help answer:

  • How can public authorities try to reduce or minimise impacts of economic sectors on the marine environment?
  • How can MPA managers try to reduce or minimise impacts of economic activities on the marine environment?
  • How can economic actors try to reduce or minimise impacts of their actions on the marine environment?

Implementation Context:

This tool was developed by CNR ISMAR within the Pharos4MPAs project, after the publication of practical recommendations that address potential interactions between different sectors and MPAs, in order to help users to easily find recommendations of concern.

Aspects / Objectives:

The main objective of the tool is to support the operationalisation of the recommendations produced within the project, translating the knowledge from the capitalisation baselines reports into a fully user-friendly online tool.

Method:

The tool is specifically intended for three kinds of users: MPA managers and planners, public authorities and economic operators. It aims to help them to easily find the recommendations and other information (e.g. best practices or case studies) that are most useful for their specific needs.

As a first step, you are invited to choose the economic sector you are interested in, amongst aquaculture, maritime transport, offshore wind energy, cruise, recreational fisheries, small-scale fisheries and leisure boating. You are then directed to background information on the economic sector of your interest, followed by an explanation of impacts related to the specific economic sector and its interactions with the marine environment. The next step is designed for more precision depending on the information you are looking for. You are invited to choose the type of user you are (among Public Authorities, MPA managers, and economic actors of the sector), as well as the impacts you want the tool to consider.

Main Outputs / Results:

Using this tool, you will get a list of recommendations you are interested in, taking into account the activities and user type you indicated during the process.

Transferability:

This tool is specifically designed for the Mediterranean Sea, and comprises seven different sectors:

  • Aquaculture;
  • Maritime transport;
  • Offshore wind energy sector;
  • Cruise sector;
  • Recreational fisheries;
  • Small-scale fisheries;
  • Leisure boating.
