The Scottish National Marine Plan, which was published in 2015, continues to be implemented. It established the strategic planning framework for the sustainable use of Scotland’s marine resources.

With respect to this Marine Scotland recently published a Sectoral Marine Plan for Offshore Wind Energy in Scottish Territorial Waters. This sectoral plan, put out on 18 December 2019, is now under public consultation until 25 March 2020.

Moreover, eleven Scottish Marine Regions have been created, with the Shetland Isles being one of the first two regions to prepare a regional marine planning. The draft Shetland Islands Regional Marine Plan (SIRMP) is under public consultation since 9 September 2019 until 30 December 2019. It is expected to be finalized in 2020, for adoption by Scottish Ministers.
