Blue Economy Forum: The Way to Green Recovery

02.03.2021

Online

The Delphi Economic Forum and the Institute for Sustainable Development of EPLO - the European Public Law Organization are organizing a thought leadership event, to convene leaders, policy-makers and the Blue Economy industry for deliberations over the pressing issues related to the maritime and coastal zone as a par excellence opportunity for sustainable development. With the Blue Economy accounting for approximately 5.4 million jobs and generating a gross added value of almost €750 billion a year in the European Union, seas and oceans and coastal areas are drivers for the European economy and have great potential for innovation and further growth.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit hard sectors such as coastal and marine tourism, fisheries and aquaculture; however, the Blue Economy with all its fully-fledged and emerging sectors can contribute decisively to a green recovery, in line with the EU Green Deal, the UN Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Topics:

  • Policy Orientations
  • Fisheries and Aquaculture
  • Shipping and Ports
  • Marine Renewable Energy: An Ocean of Opportunities
  • Maritime and Coastal Tourism

Further information and online registration are available on the event website.

Workshop:

Which role for ecosystem service assessment and valuation in supporting Maritime Spatial Planning?

10.03.2021

Online

The workshop is organised in the context of the EBA/MSP study to investigate the potential role the assessment of coastal and marine ecosystem services, and of their (socio-economic) importance in particular, can play in supporting MSP. The workshop will address the following questions:

  • What are methods and tools that can be applied to assess ecosystem services delivered by coastal and marine ecosystems and to estimate their socio-economic importance?
  • Which results can these methods and tools deliver? Which roles can these results play – and at which step(s) of the MSP implementation process – to support MSP and the integration of EBA in MSP?
  • What are specific challenges, constraints and difficulties met in applying these methods and tools – and how can these be addressed so results obtained can best support MSP, and EBA in MSP?

The online workshop is co-organised by ACTeon (France), one of the partners of the Milieu-led consortium carrying out the EASME/DG MARE study; and the MSP research team of the Institute of Marine Sciences (ISMAR) of the National Research Council of Italy, (CNR ISMAR – see www.tools4msp.eu) that has contributed to the Northern Adriatic ecosystem services assessment and valuation case study.

The workshop will take place on March 10th, 2021 from 14:00 to 17:00 CET.

For more information, contact:
At ACTeon: Sarah Loudin (s.loudin@acteon-environment.eu) and Pierre Strosser (p.strosser@acteonenvironment.eu);

Workshop:

Developing a practical method and toolbox to integrate EBA into MSP

25.03.2021

Online

This workshop will provide an early review of key elements of the study’s work on the practical method and toolbox. It will give the opportunity for MSP officials, practitioners, experts and stakeholders to contribute to the development of the practical method and toolbox in addressing the following questions:

  • Are we addressing the main operational challenges to make EBA in MSP a reality? If not, which ones should receive further attention in the practical method and toolbox?
  • Are the elements and information presented in a sufficiently operational way to guide MSP experts to do it in practice?
  • Are we presenting it in the right format – and if not, what should we change to make it more readily accessible and understandable?

Participants will be invited to draw on the recent experience preparing maritime spatial plans and to provide examples of good practice and note key challenges encountered.

The workshop will take place on 25 March 2021, from 09h00 to 11h15.

The workshop is being organised by the team preparing the EBA/MSP study. It will be hosted by ACTeon (France). Wageningen Research will lead the presentation of the draft practical method. Other partners of the consortium, including the Baltic Environmental Forum and Milieu Consulting will help to lead breakout sessions.

Please register for the workshop here.
