Celebrating ocean literacy in the Mediterranean Sea

A new wave of ocean literacy activities is fast approaching, this time the Mediterranean Sea basin. Supported by the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the European Commission, the EU4Ocean Coalition is preparing its Let's Make the Mediterranean Blue sea basin event, organised around Med Coast Day (September 25th). It will combine a rich and diverse programme on-site, in digital and in hybrid format, organised in different Mediterranean locations. Together, by connecting Mediterranean ocean literacy actors and initiatives, it will serve as a focal point for bringing ocean literacy to everybody’s mind and actions.

This ESPON Peer Learning Workshop (PLW) will focus on the green offshore energy potentials of the Black Sea and also on how these potentials could be best exploited in an economically and ecologically sustainable way.

Online seminar on applying an Ecosystem-Based Approach in Maritime Spatial Planning

In the framework of the Joint Roadmap to accelerate Maritime/Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) processes worldwide, an online seminar will present the results of a new study on how to integrate an ecosystem-based approach in MSP.

This session is jointly organised by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission as well as the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) and European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

Towards an EU Strategy for Sustainable Tourism: building forward smarter and greener in the EU coastal & insular regions

The event organised with the support of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions and co-funded by WINTER MED project (Interreg MED programme) will be held on Friday, 1 October 2021 from 11:00 to 16:30 (CEST).

The event "Towards an EU Strategy for Sustainable Tourism: building forward smarter and greener in the EU coastal & insular regions" will be organised in an online interactive format, as a virtual exchange between members of the EU Parliament, representatives from CPMR coastal and insular regions belonging to different sea basins of Europe, the European Commission and key territorial stakeholders.

Final Conference of the MSPglobal Initiative

The Intergovernemental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is convening together with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) the final conference of their joint MSPglobal Initiative on Tuesday 5 October 2021 from 16:00 to 19:00 CEST (virtual format).

Since its launch in November 2018, in addition to developing international guidance on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), MSPglobal has implemented two pilot projects in the Western Mediterranean and Southeast Pacific which resulted in the formulation of transboundary recommendations on MSP and the sustainable blue economy. It has also carried out capacity development activities at global scale to foster knowledge exchange and dialogue, in line with the IOC-UNESCO/DG MARE Joint Roadmap to accelerate MSP processes worldwide.

The meeting will have English, French and Spanish interpretation.

The EU strategy on offshore renewable energy published in November 2020 emphasises the importance of cooperation at European and regional level for the development of offshore renewable energies. In this context, the Commission organises this on-line conference to bring together representatives from various EU country ministries and selected stakeholders to share experiences, with a vision to reach an installed capacity of 60 GW of offshore wind and 1 GW of ocean energy in the EU by 2030.

After an online consultation process in 2020/2021 with a preparation stage and an advanced stage, a face-to-face event is organised from 29 November to 1st December 2021 in Monaco to finalise the Post-2020 MPA Roadmap.
