The Marine Management Organisation reported that in July Ireland’s Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government hosted the first meeting of Marine Planning Administrations in Cork. Representatives were invited from the UK (Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England) and the Isle of Man. The event consisted of roundtable discussions aimed at:
- providing an update on the current position of administrations in relation to the marine planning process
- discussing the merits of different approaches to marine plans e.g. the balance between specific and strategic content
- thinking about what transboundary cooperation might focus on in the future
Discussions were also informed by examples of marine management challenges and opportunities identified during a tour of Cork Harbour. The exchange helped to clarify cross-border matters and discussions will inform the MMO’s plan development, as well as implementation, monitoring and future evidence projects.
