The Irish Parliament voted in favour of a motion to designate 50% of Irish waters (800,000 km2) as a coherent network of MPAs. Although the motion is non-binding, the Irish Minister responsible for Housing, Planning and Local government pledged to bring an 'Ocean Bill' into legislation. Now only around 2% of the Irish maritime area is protected.
