Dutch North Sea Days

The North Sea Days are an annual two-day congress where scientists, policy makers and industry players meet and discuss all topics related to the research and use of the North Sea. It is organised by Wageningen Marine Research, Deltares, RWS, TNO and the NIOZ. This year it is organised by the NIOZ: the Dutch Institute for Maritime Research. This years' theme is 'Thinking about the North Sea'. The Dutch maritime research institutes, together with the Ministries of Education, Culture and Science, Infrastructure and Water, Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, as well as the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, developed several research themes that will be discussed during the North Sea Days through presentations and workshops. 

The themes include:

North Sea Ecology

  • The natural relationship between geophysical, checmical and ecological structures and processes
  • Long term developments of the physical-chemical and biological factors - trends and methodology  
  • Effectiveness of spatial protection
  • Anthropogenic pressures - cumulative effects 
  • The effects of sea level rise

Sustainable maritime economic activities in the North Sea

  • Building with Nature
  • Nature Recovery
  • Sustainable Energy

Governance and Safety in the North Sea

  • Safety on the North Sea
  • Governance of the North Sea - a balance beteen legal, policy, stakeholder- and knowledge aspects
